Workshop Preparation - Underwater Photography

Usually when someone mentions underwater photography I think of documentary, sporting and recreational photos of fish, eel grass, sharks, whales and octopus but there seems to be a growing number of photographers engaging in underwater fashion.

Interesting article Aerial Photography by Philip Greenspan, February 2007
http://photo.net/learn/aerial/primer

It covers topics such as:
Airplane or Helicopter?; Best time of day; Film or digital; Vibration and Motion-blur; and Appropriate lenses. Interesting read.

Another great article Aerial Phothography or How to Photograph from Aircraft by Ken Rockwell, 2005.
http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/aerial.htm

This article covers many of the same topics as the Greenspan article but in more detail.

Last year when we did the Tasmanian trip I took the opportunity to do a helicopter tour at Cradle Mountain and the Sea Plane at Strahan. Both flights were a great experience.

Workshop Preparation- Fashion

Albert Watson Inc. http://www.albertwatson.net

Many interesting images in Albert Watson's Fashion Gallery, from the simple B&W handbag on the wall to the very colourful redhead with the yellow and red backgrounds. He has a variety of location and studio shots in the fashion gallery (78 images) although there are some I would consider life-style or snapshots rather than displaying any fashion items.

Although I can't recognise the brand of this handbag on the wall I'm sure that may women will know exactly who made it. For me this image implies a fashionable bag suitable for every day use based on the environment visible in the street mirror, the rough wall and the B&W treatment of the image.

Photo: 85mm lens, 4m from the wall, camera about the height of the bottom of the mirror, natural sunlight based on the strong shadow on the wall to the bottom right of the mirror. The reflection of the bag on the wall just below it indicates to me there is a reflector being used to bring up some detail on the right hand side of the bag.

I rally like the below minimalist fashion photograph. The fashion portion of the image occupies the bottom right corner totalling about one-eighth of the image. The model with the classic plain black dress, this one sleeveless and with plunging neckline, red shoulder length hair with a chunky bracelet to compliment her hair. I find the 'negative space' of the inside of the old wooden seated and brass handrail train to provide the mood of the image. The use of DoF keeps bringing the eye back to the model.

Contrasting to the above image, with the exception of the model's hair, the images below use striking bold colours in the background and the clothing the model wears. Her pale complexion and strawberry blond hair is ideally suited to the clothing and background.

Dark background contrasting with light clothing and fair haired model. Two very striking images.

Fashion Gone Rogue, photographer Anouk Nitsche  http://fashiongonerogue.com/noah-anouk-nitsche-fashion-rogue/

50 mm lens at 2.5-3m. camera about shoulder height, studio light quite high and to the right of camera with a p70 reflector providing the strong light on her face, shoulder and blouse but fading off to allow the detailing/beading on the skirt to be seen.
